A bust of Jim Morrison stolen 37 years ago from his gravesite at Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris has finally been recovered by French police during an unrelated fraud investigation. The graffiti-covered marble bust was sculpted by Croatian artist Mladen Mikulin, and originally placed at the gravesite in 1981 on the 10th anniversary of Morrison’s death. A rep for the Morrison estate says they are “happy to hear the news” of officials finding the missing bust, adding, “Obviously it’s a piece of history, and one Jim’s family wanted there on his grave, so it’s gratifying to see that it’s been recovered.” The mystery of who stole the statue and their whereabouts remains unresolved, with speculations about the theft persisting, including a claim that it was actually Père-Lachaise that removed the bust in an effort to preserve it and keep Doors fans from desecrating the site.
