Man Stabs Himself in Leg in Hopes of Avoiding Impaired Driving Charges

South Simcoe Police weren’t buying an Alliston man’s story when they responded to a collision on the weekend. On Jan. 6, around 5:45 a.m., police responded to a collision involving a truck that had struck a house near Wilson and Metcalfe drives in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury. When police arrived, the truck was found unoccupied with major front-end damage. The responding officer was following footprints in the snow when he heard a man screaming in pain. The officer found a man at the rear entrance of the house, with a woman attending to an injury on his leg.

Police say after a further investigation, the officer learned that the man was the driver of the unattended truck, and that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Police say the 25-year-old man from Alliston drove the truck into the house, and thought that by stabbing himself in the leg and claiming his truck was about to be stolen, he wouldn’t be charged. He was transported to hospital and treated and released. His injury was non-life threatening. He was charged with Impaired Driving, Fail To Remain At The Scene, Dangerous Operation, Public Mischief and Failure to Provide Blood Sample. He will appear in court on Jan. 25.
